Alstom Entrusts Three Quebec Universities with Its AI and Industry 4.0 Transformation
On September 17, 2026, rail giant Alstom announced a research partnership with three Quebec universities: Université Laval, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS). The goal: integrating artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0 technologies into train design and manufacturing.
The historic La Pocatière plant, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, will serve as the test bed for this collaboration. Concretely, the research teams will work on teaching machines to weld increasingly autonomously, optimizing production organization, and even involving AI in the design of railcars.
Why does this matter for Quebec industry? Because this announcement illustrates a fundamental trend: numerical simulation and AI are no longer laboratory tools — they are becoming the heart of industrial competitiveness. The digital twin of a welding line, the topological optimization of a railcar structure, virtual validation before the first physical prototype: this is the everyday reality toward which rolling-stock manufacturing is heading.
For Quebec manufacturing SMEs, the message is clear. Major prime contractors are digitizing their engineering at high speed. Suppliers who already master simulation — structural analysis, fluid dynamics, optimization — will have a head start when these methods become contractual requirements.
At Simu-K, this is exactly the movement we have been supporting since 2013: helping local companies validate their designs through simulation before cutting the first piece of metal.
